The following is a brief summary of organizational activities and events. Please disseminate as you see fit.
A. Organizing efforts:
1. On August 2, 2007, the Queen's IV Nurses have voted for HNA to be their exclusive bargaining representative. HNA welcomes this new unit of sixteen (16) nurses!
2. On August 10, 2007, the Oahu-based Kaiser Home Health Care Nurses unanimously voted for HNA to be their exclusive bargaining representative. HNA welcomes this new unit of nine (9) nurses!
B. Steward Effectiveness Training
The following are scheduled training sessions for Stewards and interested parties (members who may be exploring an interest in steward leadership, and other Nurse Leaders):

C. Preparations for Negotiations 2008, additional Leadership Training
The following Nurse Leaders will be attending the 2007 Labor Leader Institute (LLI) hosted by our National affiliate, the United American Nurses, to aid in preparation for negotiations, and to broaden their knowledge base in labor administrations:
1. Denise Keomalu - Queen's Med Ctr Negotiator, Unit Chairperson
2. Ken Obayashi - Hawaii Med Ctr - East Negotiator, District 4 Board Director
3. Marina Robinson - Kaiser (Honolulu Clinic) Negotiator, District 6 Board Director
4. Michele Brailo - Kapiolani Med Ctr Negotiator, BU Board candidate
5. Kathleen Abuluyan - Wahiawa Gen Hosp Negotiator, Unit Chair, BU Board candidate
Interim Executive Director, Hector Ramos, procured an additional 2 seats to the LLI:
6. Joan Craft - Queen's Med Ctr Negotiator, Collective Bargaining Committee
Chairperson, HNA Vice President.
7. Ravida Benjamin - Kaiser Med Ctr Negotiator, former HNA Secretary, Vice Presidential
candidate 2007.
Should either one of the additional two attendees be unable to take the time off in September, an HNA Labor Relations Specialist will be sent to the LLI, at the Executive Director's discretion.
The secondary criteria for attendance to the LLI is: new Nurse Leader/s who have not attended any formal training in labor administrations.
Information reflected in A & B will be published in the organization's official publication, the HNA ACTION.
D. Governmental Affairs
1. Interim Executive Director, Hector Ramos, is in the process of organizing HNA's dues-paying retired members, to establish a Retired Nurses network or club, where these members may choose to be actively involved in various facets of the organization, at levels of involvement they feel comfortable with, i.e., we may need them to support us at the Legislature, to push forth our legislative initiatives, such as HB 2123 Safe Staffing, the No-Lift Bill introduced by our Interim ED, and other endeavors.
2. Legislative visits for the month of August:
August 23, 2007 at 1000 hours: Meeting with Congressman Neil Abercrombie.
August 28, 2007 at 1030 hours: Informal meeting with the new Director of the Dept. of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) Board, Darwin L. Ching.
August 29, 2007 at 1430 hours: Meeting with Congresswoman Mazie Hirono.
